The U.S. Immigration regulations place certain restrictions on hiring foreign students who are enrolled in educational institutions in the United States. Enrolled foreign students with F-1 status are entitled to work for UWSP only on campus. UWSP provides several opportunities for students to work on campus: (i) to work in the University Food Service; or (ii) to work in each department of the University, including University Center or non-University Center.
The University Food Service hires a large number of students to help with meal service. The positions including dishwasher, kitchen staff, dining service staff, and so on. In addition, the dining room located inside the University Center is responsible for banquets or large-scale dinner parties both externally and internally, therefore, it provides some attendant positions to students. Moreover, both the University’s main dining room and the University Center’s dining room provide the position of student manager. If you work there for a period of time and meet the manager’s requirements, as well there’s someone have just graduated or resigned from, you may have the opportunity to become a student manager to in charge of the other students’ work.
An hourly wage is required for all positions. For example, the wage for general employee and student manager are respectively $5.65 per hour and $6.65 per hour. And increase wage by $0.25 per hour for the students who are working continually per semester completed.
The University Center offers various positions to students. There are a great many students applying for a job provided by the University Center not only due to the high payment, over $6.00 per hour, but also due to the enjoyable working environment, as well you will benefit from working: making lots of friends and learning more skills. Besides these hot positions, there are also some positions, such as network management, graphics design, accountant and human recourses, shall not be applied for by every student due to high requirements of the technique. But the wage for these positions is over $7.50 per hour, and will be increased by $0.10 per hour to $0.30 per hour per semester completed.
The Residential Living recruits and hires for a number of positions throughout the year. The students can apply for various positions provided by Residential Living, which shall not be paid hourly, but shall grant a fee waiver covering either room or board fees, or both of them. Though the students taking up these positions could not apply for any other positions, as well they need to be arranged for duty, there are also some students willing to take up these positions due to the more attractive payment. Another type of position provided by Residential Living is the cleaner, whose responsibility is to clean out the area of corridor and stairs of a residence hall. The students taken up the position of cleaner shall only spend 2 hours each day, when they deemed appropriate, doing cleaning work.
The positions available in the Foreign Student Office (FSO) are also interested by students. Although the tasks here are simple everyday, it requires that the students working in the FSO should have characteristics such as patience and carefulness, as well as they should maintain confidentiality of the sensitive or important information of the other students obtained during working, such as privacy, identity, and so on. In addition, the activities and New Freshman Orientation that FSO involved in are the attractions of this job. However, the positions provided by FSO shall not be paid hourly, but shall grant a fee waiver covering partial tuition directly.
With the exception of the positions offered by the University Center, there are also a number of positions provided by other departments of the University. These positions vary from one to another, including IT, office staff of each department, and the University police. And the positions that suitable for foreign students are mainly including (not in order of precedence):
1. Various positions provided by the University’s Dining Room
2. Computer Lab Manager of the University
3. The University’s IT staff (such as program, or hardware, or maintenance)
4. Cleaner of the residence hall
5. Various positions provided by the University Center
6. Officer or off-campus assistant of each department (especially for Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, which could exert the advantage of Chinese Education System)
7. Officer of the Foreign Student Office
